The PuttOUT Devil Ball is a golf ball like training aid focused solely on face angle at impact. Improve your face angle and make more putts.
It’s more than just a golf ball with lines on it. In fact, it only resembles a golf ball. It’s a devilish design.
“Designed with a flat-edged impact zone, this brand new training aid from PuttOUT exaggerates the face angle delivered at impact for instant, understandable feedback.”
In fact, it’s twice as hard to hit squarely as a regular golf ball. It requires a square face angle at impact with 1/2 the tolerance of a normal golf ball.
I believe the idea is that if you can hit the Devil Ball straight, then hitting a golf ball straight will seem like a piece of cake.
Design
The PuttOUT Devil Ball is not 100% round like a golf ball.
There is a “pro” side, “intermediate” side, and a “beginner” side to the ball.
Pro being almost flat and beginner being more rounded like a regular golf ball.
How to use it
First of all, this is a very challenging training aid. I tried starting out with the “Pro” side and it can become extremely frustrating.
I was hitting the Devil Ball everywhere other than straight.
If you rotate the ball to the intermediate side or beginner side it becomes easier to roll straight.
You set it up like a “lined” golf ball. That allows you to square your putter face at set up. The key is returning it to square at impact.
The “Pro” side is almost flat. If you are off even a little bit, the ball goes right or left off the putter face immediately.
Thus, the Devil Ball….I was talking to the ball in just a few putts.
Conclusion
UPDATE: When I wrote the following, I was using my old putter. With my new putter I can hit this Devil Ball straight using the PRO location. So, if you are having trouble as I did, it could be your technique or in my case the putter I was using. I will probably use it from 3 feet and I will try some longer putts. It’s not meant for long putts.
PuttOUT makes great products.
The Devil Ball is a well made product.
However, it is not for me. It may be awesome for other golfers.
I’m not sure I would buy these again. ★★
The aren’t awful, but they would not be my first choice for training putter face angle at impact.
Some of their products are extremely challenging on purpose. The idea is to train on difficult tasks to become better during regular play.
The Devil Ball set is around $30. It comes with two Devil Balls, a Ball Marker, and a nice carry bag. It’s quality stuff.
However, there are other ways to measure face angle at impact that require less messing around.
I used the Devil Ball for about 10 minutes and the set has been sitting on the floor for about two weeks now. I haven’t touched it.
Maybe I’ll try it again down the road.
My rule of thumb is that it’s a good idea to use training aids that make you want to use them.
